What is Loss?

" Loss is the fact or process of losing something or someone that we value"

Experiencing loss can mean the loss of a person, a relationship, a job role, a possession the way of life in which there is safety and security. By security this could mean both emotional and financial security.

 This brings with it a period of adjustment where we learn to find our meaning and live our life without what we have lost. Within this period it is normal to experience difficult in fact sometimes overwhelming and unfamiliar feelings.

How each individual experiences loss depends very much on the personal value and meaning of their loss. The depth of feeling they experience directly relates to a number of different factors which can complicate or influence the process of grief that they feel. Factors that influence loss include who or what has been lost, personality type, past history, upbringing and early life experiences, cultural heritage or spiritual beliefs.
